Before I visited the small city of Bruges (Belgium), I didn’t really know what to expect. Everybody told me that there were too many tourists walking around. That’s absolutely true, but there’s still a lot to see and the city is really beautiful. In this article, I’ll share my top 5 favorite things to do in Bruges.

Explore the area around Minnewater
When you arrive in Bruges by train, there’s a big chance that you walk into the city along a small lake called Minnewater. A great choice, because this is a beautiful (and not too crowded) part of Bruges. Around the lake, there are a couple of small parks and benches, a perfect place to relax and enjoy the views.
Drink Belgium beer at the Markt
Every time when I visit a Belgium city, I just have to drink a Belgium beer on some sort of square. The most well-known square is the Market (market square), this is also the place where you’ll find the ancient belfry of Bruges. Ordering a beer on this square is really expensive, but they are quite big and the view of all the historic buildings around you is very rewarding.
Get out the historic city center
There are many, many tourists walking around in the city center of Bruges, so make sure to walk a little further. It’s already less crowded around the square of Jan van Eyck and this area is just as beautiful as all the streets in the crowded city center.
Relax in Koningin Astridpark
If you’re lucky and the weather is great, make sure to visit Koningin Astridpark (named after the former Belgium Queen Astrid). Take a plaid, something to drink and a piece of bread and enjoy the silence.
Just wander around town and enjoy the views
The best thing to do in Bruges? Just wander around and explore. Don’t follow all the other tourist, just walk into the small streets, and enjoy the sight of the beautiful historic buildings. There’s so much to see!
