Travelling is awesome, but a long-haul flight can be killing. My longest flight so far was a little over thirteen hours (Taipei to Amsterdam) and that was pretty hard. Luckily I’m starting to getting used to those long flights, and know how to prepare. In this article I’ll share my best tips, to help you on your next long-haul flight.

Relax before you get on the plane
There is absolutely no point in showing up and be stressed before getting on a plane. Start your preparations a few days before your trip. Make sure your bags are all packed, get some good night sleep and try to avoid alcohol. It’s no fun to sit on a plane for 10 hours with a hangover. Make sure you arrive at the airport early, you never know how long the lines will be. It’s always better to be early (so you’ll have time for a nice piece of cake) than to run late.
Wear your most comfortable clothes
In a plane, it’s either too cold or too hot, so layers is the magic word. Make them as comfortable as possible, jeans are horrible when you have to sit in a tiny chair for 10 hours. My favourite outfit is a legging, a loose dress and two sweaters. And don’t bring your fancy high heels on the plane, you will hate. It’s best to wear shoes you can get on and off easily, like sneakers (I love my all stars!). Make sure to pack some extra socks, you want your feet to stay warm.
Get your own entertainment
Usually, you’ll have a personal screen on a long-haul flight, but I always make sure to bring some entertainment for myself. The screens don’t always work and sometimes you just want to do something else than watching movies. I make sure to always bring these things:
– an e-reader (or a book, whatever you prefer).
– a puzzle book (don’t forget to bring a pen).
– travel games (it’s always fun to play a game with your travel companion).
– Tablet or laptop with your own movies (you can download your favourite Netflix show).
– Your own headset (they usually offer these in most aircraft, but I always prefer to bring my own). And if you’d like to listen to your own music, it’s possible to download your favourite Spotify-playlist on your phone (only if you have a premium subscription).
Walk around and exercise (if possible)
No matter how much entertainment you bring, it’s never good to stay in your seat for several hours. Make sure to take a walk every few hours. You can also do a little work out in your seat, check out this website for some examples.
Make yourselves at home in your seat
Your seat will be your home for several hours, so make sure to feel at home. Put everything you might need during the flight in the pocket in front of you (for example your book, a water bottle, headphones and some candy). I also love to cuddle up in a blanket (usually provided in the plane, but it’s also good to bring your own). And don’t forget to bring a neck-pillow, so it will be easier to fall asleep during the flight.
Sit back & relax!
You don’t have to do work, clean the house, do laundry or anything else. So the only thing you can do is relax!
These are my tips to make your long-haul flight as comfortable as possible. What’s your best tip?
