Visit Plaza de la Revolución

The Plaza de la Revolución is a huge square just outside of the city center of Havana. In the center of the plaza, you will see a big statue of José Marti (you will see his face all around town). Surrounding the square are a couple of big flats, with the faces of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara en Camilo Cienfuegos. The square is mostly used by the government to talk to the people. Fidel Castro gave a lot of speeches on this square. If you arrive in Havana, the Plaza de la Revolución is probably one of the first things you’ll see, because it’s on the road from the airport to Havana Viejo.

Strolling along the streets of Havana Viejo

Havana Viejo is the place to be in Havana. It’s the oldest part of the city and has beautiful streets, loads of colonial buildings and colorful squares. You can wander around in this neighborhood for hours, there is so much to see. It’s also the best place to look for accommodation, it has great hotels in old buildings and you can walk pretty much everywhere. In this area, you’ll find a lot of restaurants with live music.

Museo de la Revolución

Havana is all about the revolution. One of the best places to learn about the revolution is the Museo de la Revolción. The building itself was part of the revolution in 1957, and you can still see the bullet holes in the marble walls. In the museum, you’ll see a lot of pictures of Che and Fidel and large Cuban flags. You will also find out that Cubans aren’t big fans of the United States. Outside there are huge Cuban rockets next to some scrap metal. And inside you’ll see some political cartoons of former American Presidents. The main attraction of the museum is the yacht Granma, which was used to transport fighters from Mexico to Cuba to start the revolution in 1956.

Hotel Inglaterra is the oldest hotel in Havana and is on a beautiful location, close to the famous Capitol building. It has a rooftop bar, which you can also visit if you’re not a guest of the hotel. On the rooftop, you can enjoy the best Cuban cocktails with a great view and live music.

Take the perfect photo of El Capitolio

El Capitolio is the most iconic building in Havana and was built before the start of the revolution. In front of the building, you’ll always find loads of colorful old timers. It’s the spot to take a perfect photo of Havana. Unfortunately, El Capitolio was covered in scaffolding, during my visit. So I guess I need to go back to Havana, to take that perfect picture.
